The skills I have learned
Throughout my career, I have been a leader and manager in several different contexts. I have faced various challenges, mostly successfully in my own terms. Retirement has been active and fulfilling: a time to explore and to contribute to others.
My skills and awareness as a coach and mentor come from several different past roles:
- Consultant Anaesthetist (1987 – 2014) – focus on the safety and dignity of my patients.
- Clinical Lead for Intensive Care (1992 – 1999) – effective teamwork in a complex technical environment.
- Medical Director, Hyperbaric and Diving Medicine (1987 – 2003) – innovation and technical expertise, private enterprise, national leadership.
- Chairman of Trustees, Medical Education charity (1997 – 2006) – legal and financial accountability, trust and fairness.
- Director Medical Education (2009 – 2012) – supporting trainees in difficulty, educational leadership, systems and evidence.
- Chair of Drugs and Therapeutics Committees (1997 – 2016) – personal academic challenges, equity and transparency, working across boundaries.
- Executive Coach and Mentor (2012 – present) – communication and self-awareness, with and for others.
